CN Opens Its Doors to Indigenous Youth

Creating Opportunities, Building Connections, and Inspiring the Next Generation of Railroaders

In the summers of 2024 and 2025, a group of Indigenous high school students stepped into the world of railroading at CN, gaining firsthand experience and a glimpse into careers they may not have previously considered.

Through a one day tour, students explored a wide range of railroading roles by connecting directly with CN employees at facilities in Quesnel, B.C., and Edmonton, AB.

This initiative was made possible through a partnership between CN and the Outland Youth Employment Program (OYEP), a national network focused on land-based education, training, and employment opportunities for Indigenous youth.

Discovering Careers in Rail

Students were introduced to the many paths available at CN from operations and engineering to leadership roles across the company.

“It was amazing to see how a big company like CN works and to hear about the different careers, internships and programs that help students gain real experience,” says student Taezen Dehenny. “It showed me that there are so many opportunities out there.”

CN teams collaborated closely to create a safe, engaging and informative experience. Employees from across departments helped lead tours and shared their personal career journeys.

“I remember what it was like to need some direction in life,” said Robert Wells, Officer, Training and Development at CN, who helped lead the tour. “I hope the students are inspired to consider some great career options at CN for their future.”

Learning Through Experience

The visit began with a safety briefing and stretching exercises — a key part of CN’s safety culture.

Students then met with CN’s Operations and Management teams to learn about daily rail operations and the wide range of opportunities available, from conductors and engineers to mechanical and support roles.

They had the chance to ride a locomotive through the yard and see firsthand how CN powers the North American economy, while also learning about CN’s Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plan.

Throughout the program, students were encouraged to ask questions, engage with employees, and explore what a future at CN could look like.

Looking ahead, CN remains committed to supporting Indigenous youth through programs that inspire, educate, and open doors to future careers.
