Lighting the Way

CN EcoChampions boost safety and peace of mind in Detroit

Sometimes, shedding a little light on an issue is all you really need to do to fix it. That was Regional Manager Lance Osmond’s approach to the chronic issue of poor lighting at CN’s King Road Autoport in Detroit, MI.

“The old lights throughout the 25-acre facility were inefficient. They used to flicker constantly and when one light burnt out in a tower the whole tower went out. They were also expensive to maintain because they needed constant servicing,” says Lance, an EcoChampion.

He applied to CN’s EcoFund which paid for the replacement of the old metal halide bulbs with LEDs in the existing light towers and two additional ones. “The difference was literally like night and day,” comments Lance. “The new lights have improved safety, operational efficiency, and the work environment for employees. We’ve received kudos from carriers and our security company for the well-lit facility which I believe acts as a deterrent to trespassing and theft.”

The lighting project will reduce 46 tonnes of CO2e a year from the environment and is projected to save the shop $9,000 a year in energy costs.

“Better lighting brings a sense of peace and safety all around and we are thankful to EcoConnexions for the help,” adds Lance.

CN’s EcoConnexions Employee Engagement program – a partnership with Earth Rangers – drives sustainability across CN's network by empowering employees and their families to conserve energy, reduce waste, and improve housekeeping.
