Be A Leader in Safety
We look out for each other to ensure
we all go home safely to our loved ones
Employee Safety
At CN, safety is a core value that defines what we stand for and how we operate. It is not a priority that shifts with circumstances, but the foundation of how we lead, how we work, and how we look out for one another.

Our Safey Policy

CN’s ambition is to be the safest provider of transportation services in North America, fully devoted to safety as our core value and fostering a culture of safety excellence through leadership engagement, collaboration, and adoption of safety technologies.

This ambition is anchored in three measurable outcomes:

  • Eliminating fatalities
  • Preventing catastrophic events
  • Reducing injuries and illnesses

To achieve these outcomes, CN is committed to four ambition enablers:

  • Leadership & Culture

Where leaders foster an enabling environment to deliver strong safety outcomes and employees commit to looking out for themselves and each other.

  • Critical Risks & Controls

Where controls are in place to continuously manage critical risks, prevent catastrophic events, and ensure effective safeguards.

  • Learning & Communications

Where employees share a collective mindset of continuous safety improvement, supported by communications, training and shared learnings.

  • Systems & Technology

Where technology is harnessed to provide digital tools and standardized systems to deliver consistent, data-driven safety practices across the organization.

CN uses a wide variety of processes and initiatives to maintain a safe workplace. This includes our Safety Management System (SMS), a formal framework for integrating safety into day-to-day operations.

This Policy, adopted pursuant to SMS regulations, applies to all CN employees and also governs CN’s relationship with contractors and other stakeholders while on CN property.

CN cooperates and engages with regulatory agencies and complies with all applicable regulations to maintain a safe, secure, and healthy workplace.

All employees are responsible for complying with CN’s safety policies, rules, standards, and procedures.

Life Critical Rules
Among the safety rules we observe at CN are ones that, if not followed to the letter, can lead to serious injury or even death. These are called Life Critical Rules, and your life, your co-workers’ lives and the safety of the communities we serve depend on them.
