Hazardous Materials - Origin in USA

What is this?

The Hazardous Materials - Origin in USA block allows you to enter specific information, including all necessary regulatory information, for shipments of hazardous materials originating in the United States. Single product, mixed load, and compartmentalized tank car shipments are supported, including shipments of residue, hazardous waste and recyclable materials.

When is it used?

It must be used for all shipments originating in the United States containing hazardous materials.

Select the right type of shipment when creating your pattern:

  • Single load/residue
one product or shipment of residue in a railcar, container, or trailer.
  • Mixed load (up to 25 products)
multiple products shipped in a railcar, container, or trailer.
  • Compartment (up to 4 products)
one or more products, including residue, shipped in a compartmentalized tank car.

Selecting the product

For single load or residue shipments, select the product in the Product Description and Weight block. The Hazardous Materials block will automatically be pre-populated with all known information for that product.

For mixed loads and compartments, you must select a Freight All Kinds product (STCC begins with '485' or '495') in the Product Description and Weight block. Then you must select the products being shipped within the mixed load (Hazardous Materials button) or compartment sections.

Important: Always review carefully the product that you have selected to ensure that it indicates the correct Regulatory Authority, Proper Shipping Name, Class, etc.

Mixed Load

When shipping a mixed load of more than one hazardous material, you need to enter the regulatory information for each product. The number of product forms that appear in your pattern, on the numbered navigation bar, is based on what you selected when you created your pattern. If you do not have enough forms for the number of products in your shipment, save your pattern then go to Pattern Manager (Utilities --> Create/Edit Pattern) to edit your pattern and add more mixed products using the Mixed Load picklist.

Press the Copy to Next button to quickly copy all information that you have entered into the current product form to one or more other forms. For this feature to work, the current form must be free of errors.

When you have finished entering all products, press the Done button. Each product form will be validated for accuracy according to the regulations. The numbered navigation bar will appear in red for any form that has errors, and the error messages will appear within that product form. When all forms are free of errors, you will be returned to the main Shipping Instructions form where you can Save or Submit the information.

Compartment

When shipping a compartmentalized tank car, you must indicate the hazardous materials that are contained within each compartment. The number of compartment sections that appear in your pattern is based on what you selected when you created your pattern. If you do not have enough sections for the number of compartments in your shipment, save your pattern then go to Pattern Manager (Utilities --> Create/Edit Pattern) to edit your pattern and add more compartments using the Compartment picklist.
