Black History Month an opportunity to learn together

Black History Month 2023 wrapped up at CN with a number of educational, social and virtual activities that allowed employees to listen, learn, and engage in conversation.

The activities were hosted by CN’s R.I.S.E. Employee Resource Group (ERG), one of several in the company that create an open forum and safe space for employees who share common interests, to meet, share experiences and support one another. They are a valuable resource to CN regarding employee/community interests, needs and policies and to advance a respectful and caring corporate culture.

Under the theme “Stronger Together! Building a culture of growth, collaboration and inclusion”, events celebrated the strength and power of employees’ collective efforts in increasing diversity and fostering belonging at CN.

National Civil Rights Museum Event in Memphis, TN

Over 100 employees from various locations, crafts and levels across CN came together at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, TN, on February 6 for a special event that allowed CNers to honour Black people and learn about their contributions and progress for equal rights. All month long, employees from across the company were also invited to post Black History Month facts, stories and informational videos to the R.I.S.E. Yammer page.

CN Employees’ and Pensioners' Community Fund Special Fundraiser

The CN Employees' and Pensioners' Community Fund set up four special initiatives to which employees could contribute to support Black communities. Thanks to the generosity of CNers and CN’s donation match, close to $11,700 was distributed to the benefitting organizations.

Virtual Event with Wabtec’s African Heritage Forum

A packed virtual event on February 28 in collaboration with Wabtec's African Heritage Forum capped off the month, and featured Mark Grubbs, CN Vice-President, Mechanical, and Executive Sponsor of R.I.S.E. Speaking on the topic of how to “Develop As An Individual Without Losing Oneself,” Mark referenced his “cycles of learning” throughout his career journey to CN, the periods during which he had to take stock of who he was, where he was headed and how to stay true to his authentic self.
