EcoChampions Take Housekeeping Action in Prince George and Surrey, BC

EcoChampion Kris Engler, Senior Manager Motive Power at the Locomotive Reliability Centres (LRCs) in Prince George and Surrey, BC, is always looking for ways to improve the safety and efficiency of his operations. For example, years ago, each mechanic was issued their own complete set of tools. More recently, to reduce tool redundancy, the team tried to share toolboxes. “This didn’t work in practice,” explains Kris, “because employees spent too much time hunting for the tools they needed.”

In 2019, replicating the successful EcoConnexions project implemented at Edmonton’s Walker LRC, the team rolled out a new communal tool room at the Prince George LRC, where mechanics sign out the tools they need like at the library. “It was the perfect solution,” says Kris. “We went from 85 toolboxes down to just 12. Plus, employees can take out just the tools they need for the job at hand.” Lifting swings and fall protection are also stored in the tool room so their condition can be closely monitored for deterioration. The team auctioned off some of the extra tools and donated the money to a family whose home was destroyed by fire on Christmas Day.

“At first, some technicians felt a little possessive of ‘their’ tools,” says Kris. “But now we’re getting excellent feedback. The employees are happy to always have quick access to the tools they need.” These days, due to COVID-19, tools are cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and/or Spray Nine upon return to the tool room. Employees are also encouraged to use these cleaning products to keep the tools clean before, during and after use.

Another initiative by the Surrey LRC involved a better way to store spare parts that used to be kept outside where they could be damaged by the elements. The team brought in a new 90’x30’ Quonset dome with heavy-duty racking and LED lighting. “Employees can now find parts much more quickly and there are fewer slips, trips and falls. The employees feel a sense of pride working in a well-organized yard. Plus, we estimate we’ll save thousands of dollars not having to replace rusted parts,” adds Kris.
