Capital Investments Plan

2022 Capital Plan

CN plans to invest in 2022 to power sustainable growth and build the premier railway of the 21st century. These investments are part of CN’s capital program which will amount to approximately 17% of annual revenues. They include key track expansion projects that will boost capacity allowing CN to better service our growing customers.

Canadian Investments

British Columbia: $390 million

In British Columbia, CN’s investment will focus on technology, capacity, rolling stock units and company-wide decarbonisation initiatives, as well as network improvements.

Maintenance program highlights include:

Replacing 111 miles of rail;
Installing approximately 126,000 new railroad ties;
Rebuilding 37 road crossing surfaces; and
Maintenance work on bridges, culverts, signal systems, and other track infrastructure.

Alberta: $365 million

In Alberta, CN’s investment will focus on technology, capacity, rolling stock units and company-wide decarbonization initiatives, as well as network improvements.

Replacing 45 miles of rail
Installing more than 70,000 new railroad ties
Rebuilding 56 road crossing surfaces
Maintenance work on bridges, culverts, signal systems, and other track infrastructure

Saskatchewan: $185 million

In Saskatchewan, CN’s investment will focus on technology, capacity, rolling stock units and company-wide decarbonization initiatives as well as network improvements.

Maintenance program highlights include:

Replacing 25 miles of rail
Installing approximately 151,000 new railroad ties
Rebuilding 23 road crossing surfaces
Maintenance work on bridges, culverts, signal systems, and other track infrastructure

Manitoba: $160 million

In Manitoba, CN’s investment will focus on technology, capacity, rolling stock units and company-wide decarbonization initiatives, as well as network improvements.

Replacing 10 miles of rail
Installing more than 78,000 new railroad ties
Rebuilding 12 road crossing surfaces
Maintenance work on bridges, culverts, signal systems, and other track infrastructure

Ontario: $430 million

In Ontario, CN’s investment will focus on technology, capacity, rolling stock units and company-wide decarbonization initiatives, as well as network improvements.

Maintenance program highlights include:

Replacing 43 miles of rail
Installing approximately 123,000 new railroad ties
Rebuilding 84 road crossing surfaces
Maintenance work on bridges, culverts, signal systems, and other track infrastructure

Quebec: $335 million

In Quebec, CN’s investment will focus on technology, rolling stock units and company-wide decarbonisation initiatives, as well as network improvements.

Maintenance program highlights include:

Replacing 27 miles of rail;
Installing more than 118,000 new railroad ties;
Rebuilding 38 road crossing surfaces; and
Maintenance work on bridges, culverts, signal systems, and other track infrastructure.

New Brunswick: $40 million

In New Brunswick, CN’s investment will focus in technology, rolling stock units and company-wide decarbonization initiatives, as well as network improvements.

Maintenance program highlights include:

Replacing 2 miles of rail
Installing approximately 7,000 new railroad ties
Rebuilding road crossing surfaces
Maintenance work on bridges, culverts, signal systems, and other track infrastructure

Nova Scotia: $15 million

In Nova Scotia, CN’s investment will power sustainable growth and ensure the continued safe movement of goods in Nova Scotia and everywhere on CN’s transcontinental network.

Maintenance program highlights include:

Replacing 4 miles of rail
Installing approximately 20,000 new railroad ties
Rebuilding 10 road crossing surfaces
Maintenance work on bridges, culverts, signal systems, and other track infrastructure

U.S. Investments

Minnesota: $55 million

Maintenance program highlights include:

Replacement of approximately 5 miles of rail
Installation of over 105,000 new railroad ties
Rebuilds of 14 road crossing surfaces
Maintenance work on culverts, signal systems, and other track infrastructure

Wisconsin: $85 million

Maintenance program highlights include:

Replacement of approximately 10 miles of rail
Installation of approximately 10,000 new railroad ties
Rebuilds of 53 road crossing surfaces
Maintenance work on facilities, culverts, signal systems, and other track infrastructure

Michigan: $55 million

Maintenance program highlights include:

Replacement of more than 4 miles of rail
Installation of approximately 50,000 new railroad ties
Rebuilds of 19 road crossing surfaces
Maintenance work on of bridges, level crossings, culverts, signal systems and other track infrastructure

Iowa: $20 million

Maintenance program highlights include:

Replacement of more than 14 miles of rail
Installation of over 9,000 new railroad ties
Rebuilds of 14 road crossing surfaces
Maintenance work on bridges, culverts, signal systems, and other track infrastructure

Illinois: $150 million

Maintenance program highlights include:

Replacement of 10 miles of rail
Installation of over 133,000 new railroad ties
Rebuilds of 35 road crossing surfaces
Maintenance work on bridges, culverts, signal systems, and other track infrastructure

Tennessee: $30 million

Maintenance program highlights include:

Installation of approximately 38,000 new railroad ties
Rebuilds of 16 road crossing surfaces
Maintenance work on bridges, level crossings, culverts, signal systems and other track infrastructure

Mississippi: $65 million

Maintenance program highlights include:

Replacement of approximately 5 miles of rail
Installation of approximately 130,000 new railroad ties
Rebuilds of 14 road crossing surfaces
Maintenance work on bridges, level crossings, culverts, signal systems and other track infrastructure

Louisiana: $25 million

Planned expansion projects include:

Replacement of 4 miles of rail
Installation of approximately 20,000 new railroad ties
