CN Railroaders in the Community Louis Nadeau and Michael Wilson have a couple of things in common: both are S&C maintainers/technicians in New Brunswick, and both are dedicated volunteer firefighters in their communities.
Louis has worked for CN for more than 15 years and has served as a volunteer firefighter in the rural community of Lac Baker for over 25 years. He is currently Section Chief at a station with more than 15 firefighters. Michael has 16 years of service with CN and has been a volunteer firefighter for over 8 years in Sackville.
Both Louis and Michael find a lot in common in their roles as firefighters and railroaders. For example, their familiarity with railroad infrastructure and procedures helps them act swiftly and effectively in high-pressure rail-related emergencies.
To enhance their skills, both men recently attended the Tank Car Specialist course at the Security and Emergency Response Training Center (SERTC) in Colorado. The course instructs first responders in how to handle incidents involving railway tank cars.
“SERTC was the best training I’ve ever participated in,” says Michael. “Working in S&C, I knew little about all the different types of railcars we use on the railway. But by the end of the course, I was working as part of a team to manage a 30-car mock derailment.” Louis agrees: “It was invaluable to gain knowledge about these tank cars, not only as a railroader, but also in case I ever need to respond to a derailment or spill as a firefighter.”
Whether they are rushing to a fire or ensuring the safe passage of trains, Louis’ and Michael’s camaraderie and dedication help keep their communities safe.
