CN Railroaders Celebrate 30 Years Since the Company’s Privatization

On November 17, 1995, CN’s initial public offering (IPO) was one of the largest rail privatizations in the world. The Government of Canada sold CN to private investors for $2.2 billion, then the largest IPO in Canadian history.

The privatization helped propel CN’s transformation into a strong franchise. In the past three decades, CN has built an advantaged three-coast network through strategic acquisitions and supply chain partnerships, helping customers reach new markets and reinforcing the Company’s continued role in powering the North American economy.

To mark the milestone, CN railroaders from across the network who were with the Company during the IPO recall what’s changed and what remains the same, including the commitment to deliver reliable, safe and efficient service, while creating a workplace where people can develop their skills.

“I remember the excitement around the IPO day and everyone getting a chance to own a piece of the Company,” says Russ Perdue, recently retired Assistant Vice-President, Domestic Intermodal, who in 1995 was System Officer, Freight Claims and Damage Prevention, in Mississauga, ON. “No one could have imagined what we would become. I had so many memorable moments, met so many wonderful people, and travelled the world for CN.”

For many employees, the IPO also created new possibilities to explore different career paths and gain new skills. Some were able to step into managerial roles while others explored new facets of the business, developing new technical expertise and leadership experience along the way.

“I started out in the Car Department; I could have never dreamt the path or opportunities that CN afforded me, ” continues Russ. “What hasn’t changed is our passion for winning, being the best, and doing the right thing for our customers.”

Looking out for one another also remains a defining part of CN’s culture. Employees continue to support each other, lend a helping hand, and build connections that go beyond work.
