Ship to share

Every month, there are an estimated 2.2 million visits to food banks in Canada – that’s double the monthly usage recorded just 6 years go.

CN supports this demand by regularly donating shipping services to Food Banks Canada (FBC) as part of an ongoing partnership to relieve food insecurity and support communities from coast-to-coast-to-coast.

FBC equitably distributes millions of pounds of donated food to local food banks across the country each year under the umbrella of the National Food Sharing System (NFSS). Transporting such large quantities over long distances requires robust and reliable shipping capacity, and this is precisely what CN offers to allow food banks to connect and get food to the households that need it most.

CN works with FBC to determine the best shipping option for their needs, which may include the use of CargoCool™ refrigerated containers for perishable items. “We track the shipments across the country, addressing any issues that may arise so that they arrive at their destination safely and on time,” says Fiona Veening, Account Manager, Supply Chain, who manages the logistics and outreach with FBC. Along with a team of CN employees, Fiona recently volunteered to assemble thousands of healthy food packs delivered by CN for the FBC’s After the Bell program for children facing food insecurity.

Delivering nourishment and hope

The heart of CN’s partnership with FBC is to connect food to people across Canada, safely, swiftly and sustainably. Recently, CN played a key role in securing food for Albertan babies by transporting more than 45,350 kg of infant formula donated to FBC by a consumer goods company in Brampton, ON. Additionally, CN moved produce from farm to families, transporting:

  • 29,000 kilograms of bagged potatoes for food banks across Alberta
  • approximately 18,000 kilograms of greens and legumes for the East Coast
  • more than 25,000 kilograms of bagged carrots from Ontario to British Columbia for distribution on land, islands and remote areas.

Beyond in-kind shipping services, CN also contributed $50,000 last year to the National Food Sharing system to help FBC acquire and distribute quality food efficiently throughout the food bank network.
