Wildfires across Canada are growing more frequent and severe. In response, CN transformed an idea that started as a sketch on a napkin into a full-scale firefighting fleet—faster, smarter, and built to meet the unpredictable.
In 2023, CN introduced Poseidon, its proof-of-concept firefighting train. Then in 2024, Trident and Neptune joined the fleet, extending CN’s ability to deliver large volumes of water in remote areas, reinforcing both its infrastructure and protecting the safety of surrounding communities.
From Idea to Impact: Jasper 2024
During the devastating Jasper wildfires, CN’s firefighting trains supplied millions of gallons of water to help fire crews battling flames in areas unreachable by road. Working alongside local firefighters, CN was able to increase the water capacity in the area, helping efforts in Jasper to extinguish the flames.

INCREASE IN WATER
CAPACITY IN 2025
In 2025, CN has worked to double the trains’ water capacity from 50,000 to 110,000 gallons, ensuring greater endurance for future wildfire emergencies.
To the Rescue in Peers, Alberta in 2025
That added strength proved critical when a fast-moving wildfire threatened Peers, Alberta, this past July. CN’s Neptune arrived within hours, supporting local crews and using onboard cannons to knock back advancing flames. Residents later credited the rapid response with helping to save the town.
Protecting What Matters
Protecting CN’s network and the communities where it operates is central to CN’s values. Wildfire response is not just about infrastructure—it’s about people and their communities. CN continues to work alongside first responders, local authorities, and residents to build resilience against growing wildfire threats.
New Tools for Greater Reach
In 2025, CN is expanding its firefighting capabilities with Oceanus and Amphitrite, two new firefighting stand-alone railcars each carrying 25,000 gallons of water. Equipped with dual pumps, cannons, and hose support, they can operate independently or alongside larger trains, adding speed, precision, and flexibility to CN’s response playbook.
To increase mobility and rapid deployment, CN also launched a pilot program testing the use of fire trailers. Each trailer carries 350 gallons of water, a fixed cannon, and hose for off-track firefighting.
Water Where It’s Needed Most
In order to address water shortages in wildfire zones, CN stationed eight 30,000-gallon tank cars in strategic locations. These reserves are ready to ensure the availability of additional water in water-scarce locations, ensuring we can continue fire operations when every second counts.
