Vegetation Management at CN

Annual Vegetation Management Program - April 2024 - October 2024

CN is required to manage vegetation that may pose a safety hazard on its right-of-way. Part II of the Rules Respecting Track Safety adopted by Transport Canada provide that “vegetation on railway property, which is on or immediately adjacent to roadbed, must be controlled.” Vegetation on railway right-of-way, if not managed may contribute to trackside fires, reductions in visibility at road crossings, reduced integrity of the railway roadbed and impair proper inspection of track infrastructure.

For safe railway operations, the annual vegetation management program will be carried out on CN lands. Certified applicators will be applying herbicides on and around the railway tracks, mainly the graveled area known as the ballast, but also on other areas of the right-of-way where necessary. Product requirements for setbacks in the vicinity of dwellings, aquatic environments and municipal water supplies will be observed.

Weed Notices and Spray Requests

Weed notices and spray requests should be sent to the CN Public Inquiry Line and mention if this is operating or non operating lands.

Municipalities -To access CN lands for inspection or weed control work you/your representative must complete the Weed Control Access Permit. This is required for anyone accessing CN lands for inspection or weed control work purposes. To obtain the permit please email us.
