This ongoing optimization initiative is designed to ensure every part of the network is working together as efficiently as possible, starting with terminals. It focuses on aligning demand with existing resources, operating safely and efficiently, and remaining nimble as conditions evolve.

Through cross-functional reviews, teams take a disciplined, end-to-end view of how each terminal operates. This approach is identifying practical ways to improve traffic flow, better utilize capacity, and deliver more consistent, reliable service – while supporting growth without added cost.

Taking network performance to the next level

Fast Tracking terminal reviews launched in Memphis, TN, and Montreal, QC, in 2025, with additional major terminals completed and more slated for optimization through 2026.

This structured, network-wide approach is already making a measurable and visible impact at CN terminals, driving positive momentum across key operating metrics, alongside gains in labor, locomotive and fuel productivity. It builds from initiatives such as prior investments in locomotive modernization and engineering productivity.
