CN Railroader in the Community Amanda Burleson loves to teach young girls that they have “star power.” That’s one of the rewards of volunteering as a coach for Girls on the Run of Northwest Indiana.

The wife of Matt Burleson, Carman in Highland, Indiana, Amanda volunteers 100 hours annually for the non-profit program that works to encourage pre-teen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. Their work culminates in a celebratory 5k (3-mile) run every year.

“I had signed up my 10-year-old daughter, Jolie, for the program at her school and realized that I had to be her running buddy. I started to run myself and I actually really enjoyed it and decided to be a coach,” Amanda explains. Amanda’s volunteer work has earned the organization two grants from CN so far.

“We encourage the girls to be themselves and to be unique,” Amanda adds. Jolie is also a member of the Highland Swim Club, which inspired Matt to volunteer as a Timer for races. “Matt and I share a busy family life, but we find the time to give back to our community because it’s so satisfying to know that we are making a difference!” says Amanda.
