Putting Safety first
Nothing is more important to CN than running a safe operation. Our vision is to be the safest railroad in North America by establishing an uncompromising safety culture that leads to sustained leadership in safety.
Each year we invest a significant percentage of revenues in safety training, technology and infrastructure to ensure a safe and secure working environment and to deliver our customers' shipments damage-free.
Highlights:
- CN turned in an impressive safety performance in 2009 with a 12 per cent improvement in our FRA train accident ratio, a 30 per cent reduction in FRA main track accidents and 28% reduction in non-main track accidents. More on CN's safety performance
- We continued to invest significantly in training, coaching, awareness, motivation and employee involvement initiatives to strengthen our safety-conscious culture. More about CN's safety culture.
- CN's nearly 100 joint union-management committee's help foster a culture of safety awareness and safe practices. In 2009, nearly 95% of the committees had been evaluated for effectiveness.
- In 2009, some 100 risk assessments were made available on CniNet for employees to review and learn from. More about the review and CN's response
- In 2009, 16,614 employees received technical and safety training at CN. Courses were conducted in classrooms, on-site or on-line, and the vast majority had safe work procedures and processes integrated into the training. More
- In 2009, supervisors performed almost 328,000 efficiency tests and observations of operational activities. This represents about 900 tests per day, and is a 6% increase from 2008. More
