Safety is a core value at CN and everyday gives us a chance to renew our commitment to safety and the belief that zero is possible – zero injuries, zero fatalities, zero harm.. Sadly, as railroaders, we sometimes experience tragic reminders of how unforgiving our industry can be when we see our fellow employees get hurt or even lose their lives.
April 28 is an internationally recognized day of mourning to honour workers who have been injured or who have lost their lives on the job. This day is known in Canada as National Day of Mourning, and Workers Memorial Day in the U.S.
Every year, on April 28, at 11 a.m. local time, in honour of our fallen and injured colleagues, all yard movements at CN stop for a minute of silent remembrance. CN railroaders working on our mainline ring their engine bells to pay respect and remember those who have been injured or disabled on the job, or suffer from occupational illnesses, including mental health challenges.
On this day and every day, our thoughts are with our peers, friends and families who have suffered as the result of accidents and injuries, and we take the opportunity to pause work and rededicate ourselves to preventing such tragedies from ever happening and to eliminate exposures on our journey to zero.
