CN Railroaders in the Community: Vitale Ciocca

Vitale Ciocca’s power play for his community wins CN contest

As head coach with the NDG Minor Hockey Association in Montreal, CN Railroader in the Community Vitale Ciocca has practically lived at the arena for the past 12 years. First, he coached his daughter Alex’s ringette teams, and now he runs several hockey practices each week and presides behind the bench at games while his son, Michael, minds the nets.

NDG Hockey is very special; people get involved when their kids are superlittle, and they stay until they get out of hockey, so there’s always a parent willing to step up,” says Vitale, the Manager of Security Operations and Events Management in Montreal.

I really enjoy those special moments when I connect with a kid, because you can see that you’ve made a difference in their lives by teaching them to play with heart,” says Vitale. “It’s also special seeing the team supporting each other and learning life lessons.”

Since joining CN in 2010, Vitale’s dedicated volunteerism has qualified for annual CN Railroaders in the Community grants, and his wife Elena, who manages her children’s teams, has also been eligible for funds. On top of that, NDG Hockey just received an additional $5,000 as winner of the CN Railroaders in the Community contest, thanks to Vitale’s efforts.

CN’s support of community organizations through this program is fantastic, because we give back to where we’re living,” says Vitale, whose children also volunteer: Michael helps at church, and Alex volunteers for a local school.

NDG Hockey president Brenda Gallant notes that having longstanding corporate support is invaluable in amateur sports. “CN’s generous donations on behalf of the Ciocca family are greatly appreciated; with these funds, we help families by providing equipment or reducing fees.”

Growing up, the neighbours in my tight-knit community made sure my brother and I got to hockey or baseball. Volunteers helped me, and now it’s the same thing for me giving back to the community. Hockey’s not about winning the game; it’s what you bring to the game.”
