Intermodal Terminal Safety & Regulations - USA

In the interest of providing a safe environment for our employees and customers, the following safety and yard regulations must be complied with when operating vehicles within the terminal.

Yard Safety and Regulations

  1. All parties must obey posted yard speed limits and all traffic signs. Four-way (hazard warning) lights are to be on at all times while in the terminal. Connecting terminal drives are for the use of CN personnel and designated vendors only. All vehicles are to exit the terminal through the main gate. Driving off the roadway is prohibited.
  2. Before leaving your cab, proper safety PPE must be worn.
  3. Locomotive Engines, rail cars, lift equipment and hostlers have the right of way at all times in the terminal. Drivers will not drive under overhead cranes and must refrain from driving on the concrete crane pads.
  4. Drivers will not open any sealed trailer or container while in the terminal. High security seals that need to be removed shall be completed only at the gate with the permission of the gate personnel. Removed seals must then be disposed of properly. No trailer or container is to be moved with doors open or doors improperly secured.
  5. Drivers must remain constantly alert and aware that trains may be entering or leaving the terminal at any time of the day or night. All tracks are constantly subject to railcar or engine movement.
  6. Drivers must stop at all rail crossings before proceeding across them.
  7. Alcoholic beverages, containers, or illegal drugs are not permitted in the terminal.
  8. Removal of unassigned equipment, lading, IC, or vendor property is prohibited and will be subject to legal action.
  9. Sleeping within your truck is not permitted. This includes waiting for equipment or repairs. Overnight parking is not permitted in the terminal or adjacent property.
  10. 10. Drivers must remain in the tractor at all times, except to process paperwork or when coupling up to or uncoupling from equipment. Walking around the terminal is extremely dangerous and will not be tolerated for any reason.
  11. No Passengers or any animals are to accompany a driver on property.
  12. Talking on cell phone is NOT permitted while driving nor while being served.
  13. Drivers will not unload any trash and or debris from any trailer, container or their tractor while in the terminal.
  14. Drivers must exercise caution at all times. Driving under the overhead crane is prohibited. Do not block the designated pathways when driving in the vicinity of the terminal tracks or check point.
  15. Climbing onto any intermodal equipment, include mobile cranes/gantry cranes or rail cars is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
  16. Drivers must not attempt to couple up to any trailer, or chassis in the vicinity of the terminal tracks without first ensuring the surrounding area is free of pedestrians and overhead cranes are not approaching.
  17. Drivers must ensure the trailer or chassis is at the proper height before coupling to it.
  18. Drivers will at all times cautiously park trailers or chassis in their proper designated locations, remaining alert for pedestrians, vehicles, and train movement. All wheeled equipment will be parked with dolly legs on concrete pads.
  19. Promptly report to CN personnel, at the terminal building, any accident involving injury or damage to equipment.
  20. There will be no congregating with other drivers at the main terminal building or outside telephones. This can cause delay in the prompt exiting of equipment.
  21. Tractors with or without trailers parked unoccupied, unless as noted above, will be towed from the terminal at owner's expense.
