Gate Appointment – For CN Steamship traffic at Brampton and Montreal

In order to reduce congestion, gate appointments are now required for drivers who wish to deliver or pickup steamship traffic from Montreal and Brampton terminals.

The process:

  • Drivers arriving at Brampton and Montreal terminals to deliver or pick-up steamship traffic (loaded or empty) must have a gate appointment.
  • The appointment must be made using CN's “Gate Appointment Request” tool online.
  • To make a gate appointment, you must select the preferred date and time for your driver's arrival at the terminal and specify the service that the driver will require; e.g booking number for containers to be dropped off, unit initials and numbers for containers to be picked-up.  These specifications will have to be fulfilled by the drivers.
  • Changes to the initial gate appointment need to be made electronically, two hours prior to the appointment effective time, by a user from the company who originally made the gate appointment.
  • Appointments may be booked as of 08:45 for Brampton and 09:30 Montreal, three business days prior to the requested terminal entry date.

Cancellations and delays:

  • Drivers who arrive after the expiry of their appointments will be unable to access the terminal.  The appointment must be cancelled and rebooked for a valid arrival time.
  • Cancellation of the original appointment is subject to the terms and conditions in effect at the time of cancellation.  The appointment system is intended to provide fair and equal access for all customers. Customers that do not use their appointments may have their access suspended.
  • Cancellation must be done electronically.
  • Appointments may be cancelled without penalty up to two hours before the appointments effective time.
  • The driver may wait in a special area or leave and come back if it is earlier than the appointment window.

Exceptions:

  • Delivering steamship equipment loaded with domestic freight destined to a domestic terminal, i.e. the shipment is part of CN's domestic repositioning program.
  • Delivering reefers that will move in genset service.  The reefers will require a train reservation and may be dropped off at the terminal 6 days prior to the reservation cut off for terminals Brampton, Montreal and Winnipeg, and 4 days prior to the reservation cut off for the Vancouver terminal.

Additional information:

  • The party that makes the appointment is responsible for compliance. In order to trace the actions on your account, each user will require an individual CN eBusiness username.
  • Appointments to pick up a container cannot be made for an appointment window prior to the container's scheduled arrival at the terminal, e.g. if a container is scheduled to arrive at 15:00, the appointment cannot be made for 12:00.
  • The party making the appointment must enter the pick-up number to complete the appointment.
  • To maximize the number of customers able to secure an appointment for their preferred time, CN monitors the system for "no-shows" and "late cancellations". (A "late cancellation" is when a user cancels an appointment within two hours of the start of the appointment window). Customers unable to ship a container for which they booked an appointment should cancel their appointment as soon as possible to allow other customers to make appointments. If a user has too many "no-shows", he may have his ability to make appointments restricted.
