CN 7403 - Mileage-based Fuel Surcharge effective April 1, 2008

The fuel surcharge is mileage-based and calculated monthly, based on the Energy Information Administration (EIA) U.S. No. 2 Diesel Retail Sales by all Sellers (cents per gallon) On-Highway Diesel Fuel (HDF), starting from a base rate of $2.30.
The CN 7403 fuel surcharge will vary based on the two following types of commodities moved:

• Bulk commodities (PDF 109KB) (coal, fertilizer, and grain) – surcharge varies by $0.00575 for each $0.03 change in the price of HDF
• All other carload commodities – surcharge varies by $0.0060 for each $0.03 change in the price of HDF

CN 7402 – Mileage-based Fuel Surcharge effective April 26, 2007

Effective April 1, 2008, CN reduced the application slope of the mileage-based fuel surcharge tariff, CN 7402.

The mileage-based fuel surcharge is calculated monthly, and is based on the average price of the Energy Information Administration (EIA) U.S. No. 2 Diesel Retail Sales by all Sellers (cents per gallon) On-Highway Diesel Fuel (HDF), starting from a base rate of $1.25.

The CN 7402 fuel surcharge will vary based on the two following types of commodities moved:

• Bulk commodities (PDF 109KB) (coal, fertilizer, and grain) – surcharge varies by $0.00575 for each $0.03 change in the price of HDF
• All other carload commodities – surcharge varies by $0.0060 for each $0.03 change in the price of HDF

CN 7401 – Percent Based Fuel Surcharge effective April 1, 2005

On April 2005, CN implemented a percentage-based fuel surcharge program, CN 7401.

The fuel surcharge is calculated monthly and in $1 increments, allowing it to track closely with fluctuations in West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil price. The fuel surcharge will increase/decrease by an incremental 0.23% for each $1 change in WTI.

CN 7425 - Percent Based Fuel Surcharge for traffic moving on CN's AquaTrain, effective September 1, 2010

Effective September 1, 2010, CN is publishing the CN 7425 fuel surcharge tariff which applies only to traffic moving on CN's AquaTrain rail-marine barge to/from Alaska.

This fuel surcharge is calculated monthly. It is based on the level of an Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) index, the average price for Terrace, British Columbia Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (in cents per litre), plus applicable taxes. The CN 7425 fuel surcharge is updated each month, based on the price on the first (non-holiday) workday of the previous month. The fuel surcharge will increase/decrease by an incremental 2.6% for each $0.05 change in this index.
