Petroleum and chemicals are shipped primarily in private cars. Although CN does not supply equipment for this product group, the types of cars typically used to move Petroleum and Chemicals include:
- Pressure cars
- Non-Pressure cars
- Covered hoppers
CN moves product in “Standard” cars (maximum loading weight of 263,000 lbs) or “Jumbo” cars (maximum loading weight of 286,000 lbs). Jumbo cars give customers the advantage of shipping up to 10% more product, which gets more goods to market in any given time period.
Due to the hazardous nature of most petroleum and chemicals, however, we encourage the use of appropriate car sizes to avoid overloads, as well as the use of Jumbo cars only where facilities and rail access allow. Otherwise, fees may apply. See CN's optional services tariff for details on overload fees.
Increasingly in today's global economy, Petroleum and Chemicals move in Intermodal Containers, which is key to quicker product delivery to/from overseas. Product can be loaded into 20ft or 40ft lined containers and moved to/from Intermodal terminals on CN's network.
Through CN's Cargoflo services, CN can easily transfer liquid and dry bulk product to/from containers, railcars and truck.
Fleet Management – CN's role in efficient Private Fleet Performance
