CN launches new national giving initiative and selects Stollery Children's Hospital as community charity for 2007 CN Canadian Women's Open
Foundation to receive minimum $100,000, more fundraising online and tournament week
EDMONTON, June 14, 2007 — CN launched its new national giving initiative — the CN Miracle Match program — today and announced the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation as its designated community charity as part of this summer's CN Canadian Women's Open. As a part of CN's sponsorship of the LPGA tournament, a minimum $100,000 donation will benefit Stollery Children's Hospital — a centre of excellence in complex, life-saving care for children located in Edmonton, Alberta. The introduction of the CN Miracle Match program provides additional fundraising opportunities that will encourage public donations in support of the children's hospital before and during tournament week that will be matched by CN.
CN Miracle Match is designed to rally communities across Canada behind a very worthy cause — children's hospitals. Each year, CN will raise funds to support a children's hospital by matching funds raised through various initiatives that are connected with the CN Canadian Women's Open.
The Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for the Stollery Children's Hospital. Funding supports children's health through equipment, education, research and special services. The Stollery Children's Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility and renowned as one of the top pediatric hospitals in North America, which provides health care services to sick and injured children from one of the largest geographic areas in the world. The Stollery has over 140,000 patient visits each year and the number of children needing care is escalating.
“CN is thrilled to have this opportunity to support the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton through the CN Canadian Women's Open and to be able to match community donations in support of this cause through our new CN Miracle Match program,” said Stan Jablonski, CN's senior vice president, Sales. “Our goal is to raise $500,000 to support the Stollery through these initiatives.”
Through the CN Miracle Match program, CN will match 25% of all online donations under $1,000, received at www.cnmiraclematch.ca between now and the CN Canadian Women's Open. All donations prior to the CN Canadian Women's Open made online in excess of $1,000 will be matched 100% as will all online and on-site donations made during the tournament week August 13 – 19, 2007. A portion of the net proceeds from the tournament ticket sales will also support the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation. This practice of supporting a children's charity will be repeated by CN at future CN Canadian Women's Opens.
“We are honoured to be the beneficiary of this year's CN Canadian Women's Open,” said Foundation President & CEO, Dianne Young. “CN is bringing a great event to a great city, and we know the end result will have a very positive impact on children's health.”
2006 marked the debut of the new tournament charity program aimed at supporting children's charities in local communities. Last December, CN and the Royal Canadian Golf Association officially announced that the 2006 CN Canadian Women's Open raised a total of $413,000 (CDN) benefiting the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario at London Health Sciences Centre.
“CN have been outstanding ambassadors for women's golf and local children's charities and the RCGA is proud to be associated with CN in this major initiative,” said Rick Desrochers, chief executive officer, RCGA. "We know that golf fans in Edmonton will come out and support the stars of the LPGA and the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation.”
Jablonski made the announcement at a press conference held this afternoon at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club, host site of the August 13 - 19, 2007 CN Canadian Women's Open – the only Canadian event on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour. Also in attendance were some of the LPGA Tour's best golfers who will play in the tournament: CN-sponsored, LPGA Tour player Lorie Kane of Charlottetown, as well as fellow LPGA Tour stars Morgan Pressel, Meg Mallon, Christina Kim, Hall of Famer Dawn Coe-Jones of Campbell River, British Columbia, Alena Sharp of Hamilton, Ontario, and Calgary, Alberta's Cindy Pasechnik.
