CN addressing environmental impact of Quebec derailment
MONTREAL, June 4, 2006 — CN is taking steps to clean up fuel oil leaked into the Rivière du Loup after a train derailment on the railway's Joliette Subdivision near Charette, Que., in the Mauricie Region, about 140 kilometres northeast of Montreal.
No one was injured in the accident that occurred at 12.35 p.m. today, and the cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
Fourteen cars were derailed in the incident, including four tank cars that have leaked fuel product into the river. CN is assessing the amount of fuel release and is taking immediate steps to contain the spill and recover lost product.
CN immediately advised Environment Canada and the Quebec Ministry of the Environment following the derailment.
The 141-car freight train originated in Toronto and was destined for Arvida, Que.
