Our safety policy defines what our values and focus  are towards safety at CN starting with the CEO and permating throughout the entire company. Our Safety Policy (PDF) outlines our key measures for ensuring a safe and secure working environment.

Risk assessments allow CN employees to understand the potential safety hazards of railroad activities and take action to reduce risks.

Our Safety Integration Plans safely integrate newly acquired assets into the CN system. These comprehensive safety reviews ensure that additions or changes to CN’s network are thoroughly reviewed and safely integrated to CN`s culture.

This initiative allows supervisors to observe, and more importantly, communicate with, employees about safety in the workplace.

Prior to any railroad activity, the briefings enable work teams to discuss possible safety hazards and emergency procedures.

A tool that helps employees zero in on safety and minimizes risks is the "Safety focus". This is designed to personalize the employee's actions and to get them to Think first and Act second prior to undertaking a task . Employees take the time prior to the start of any job to ask themselves four basic questions: Do I have a clear understanding of the work to be performed? Are there any immediate hazards? Am I using the right tools and equipment for the job? Are there specific safety rules or procedures I must follow? Have I communicated with my co-workers?

Supervisors ride aboard a train to observe employees, coaching or correcting their performance.

The audits are there to monitor our commitment to, and the effectiveness of, our Safety Management System and Safety Action Plans, and to identify areas of strength, as well as opportunities for us to get even better. We aren’t satisfied allowing things to remain static – its about continuous improvement.
