In the United States, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is an integral part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Under the umbrella of DHS, CBP addresses risk and compliance issues while expediting the flow of goods across the border.

CN works in collaboration with both CBP and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to expedite transborder shipping while minimizing the risk of terrorist threat. As part of its mission for a safe and secure border, CBP employs the use of gamma-ray technology at rail ports of entry into the U.S., commonly referred to as Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System (VACIS) machines.

Clear customs without stopping at the border

VACIS technology at all CN U.S. border crossing points enable CBP and CBSA inspectors to view the contents of railcars and containers in a non-intrusive fashion, while trains are in motion, therefore streamlining CN's transborder operations.

CBSA inspectors monitor both import and export rail shipments from a central CN location on-site. This allows for advanced screening of transborder rail shipments to help eliminate security threats. The CBSA works closely with CN to ensure that there is alignment between its inspection operation and our rail operations.

CN is a fully certified participant in CBP's Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program and CBSA's Partner in Protection Program (P.I.P.).
