CN is dedicated to improving crossing safety across its system to help save lives and prevent fatalities and injuries. CN's All Aboard for Safety community-education program has been instrumental in this effort.

In 2009, we continued to use a number of highly effective prevention strategies that included:

  • Use of joint force investigations of near crashes with local law enforcement.
  • Identified the use of equipment and technology to reduce risks at high-accident crossings.
  • Increasing joint enforcement blitzes with local police services at high-incident locations.
  • Educating a total of 130,000 students in Canada and the United States during Safe Crossing Week, a 25% increase from 2008.

Key 2010 initiatives to reach targets

  • Expand joint enforcement blitzes with local police service at high-incident locations.
  • Deliver rail safety programs, including Operation Lifesaver, to schools, driver education classes, community and civic groups and the Grade Crossing Collision Investigation Training Classes to law enforcement and other first responder agencies.
  • Expand community outreach through education, training, and the Safe Crossing Week initiative to communities in Canada and the United States.
  • Continue to strengthen partnerships with various safety organizations e.g. Operation Lifesaver, Safe Communities Canada, Safe Communities America and Safe Kids Canada.
  • Fully engage provincial, federal and state officials in identifying and eliminating crossing hazards.
