Crossing Safety Information for Operators of Low Clearance Vehicles, High/Wide Loads or Slow Moving Vehicles

As part of its investigation into a November 2000 crossing accident in Florida involving a low-clearance vehicle, the US National Transportation Safety Board recommended that operators of low clearance or slow moving vehicles be required to notify the railroad in advance of any planned crossings of a highway-railway at-grade crossing.

CN supports this recommendation as an important means of helping ensure the safety of such moves.

To assist in this important endeavor, CN provides the following contact information for operators of low clearance vehicles, high/wide loads or slow moving vehicles.

Vehicle operators should contact the appropriate CN representative a least seven (7) days in advance of a planned crossing of a CN highway/railway at-grade crossing to review the safety requirements of the move and arrange for the any necessary protection.

Before contacting the railroad, vehicle operators should have sufficient detailed knowledge of the characteristics of their vehicle and load as well as the highway-railway crossing to be used, so as to be aware of any potential problems associated with the move.

It should be noted that the cost of any special protection or flagging will be the responsibility of the vehicle operator.
