Trespass Prevention

Trespassing on railway rights-of-way has become a growing problem. In fact, since 1995, in North America more people are killed each year as a result of trespassing than in crossing accidents. Finding solutions to the trespassing problem requires that municipalities and railways work hand in hand. Trespassing is not simply a railway problem to be addressed by railways and law enforcement.
There is no single solution for most trespassing situations. It has been CN's experience that the most successful solutions are those that involve combinations of public awareness, enforcement, and engineering. Involvement of local police, community groups and private businesses (such as community newspapers) will help maximize the chances for success.
As part of its involvement in Operation Lifesaver, CN has developed a Community Trespass Prevention Program which helps communities better understand how they can help the railway address trespassing problems in their area. Communities are encouraged to contact the railway to obtain a copy of the program guide.
In addition, CN actively encourages employees and the general public to report specific trespass concerns. Individuals or municipalities with concerns regarding trespass problems should contact CN at 1-888-888-5909 providing as much location detail as possible.
