Delivering Responsibly - People

Creating a great place to work

Our people are the most critical element of our success: CN people make it work.  This is why it is a top priority to attract, develop and retain the best and brightest people in the industry, while providing a safe, supportive and healthy work environment that values respect, well-being, trust, integrity and passion.

Highlights:

  • At December 31, 2010, CN employed a total of 21,967 employees in the United States and Canada.
  • In 2010, we received over 85, 000 applications through CN's website. As our screening practices and procedures are designed to attract and hire the best talent available in the market, over 2,300 new railroaders were accepted into the company.
  • In 2009, CN awarded 45 scholarships to women studying in non-traditional fields; 2 scholarships to employees' children and grandchildren with disabilities; as well as an Aboriginal Scholarship program totalling $24,000.
  • In 2009, 76.4 per cent CN employees received training in the company.
  • We include our unionized employees in our Employee Performance Scorecard process to encourage greater employee-supervisor dialogue, a progressive initiative in the rail industry. At the end of 2009, 100 per cent of managers and 96 per cent of unionized employees and their supervisors had held their EPS discussions.
  • Our prestigious President's Awards for Excellence continued to recognize the outstanding contributions of employees to CN's success.

Supporting people does not just mean supporting our employees, it means their families too. From offering daycare at Headquarters to organizing special days and providing assistance programs, family is important to CN.

People is one of five pillars of our business philosophy, and the foundation on which all our other guiding principles rest.
