CN supports a culture of continuous learning, development and growth. We offer employees at all levels over 2000 courses in a variety of fields, including leadership and business skills, technical job-specific skills, safety, computer skills and language. Our courses can be followed online, in classrooms or through interactive webinar sessions. Educational financial assistance is available to employees who wish to develop their skills through recognized educational institutions.
Some of our leading programs include:
- Executive Development Program: The program is tailored to provide individualized, detailed feedback and development planning for executive, senior and middle-level managers, and is critical in helping to develop CN's talent for the future.
- Railroad MBA: This is a tailored program internal to CN under which CN senior and executive managers leave their regular positions to develop their railroad operational knowledge through training and hands-on experience in every aspect of the company's operations.
- Railroad Certification Program: This unique program was introduced in the second quarter 2007 to train and qualify CN managers as conductors and a unique few as locomotive engineers. The program gives managers the opportunity to experience first-hand the core of the company's operation – improving their skills and their passion for running the railroad.
- First line supervisor programs: Four programs for training first line supervisors are part of an ongoing initiative to develop talent within CN. The six to 12-month programs blend training and structured on-the-job-learning to build the leadership skills and railroad knowledge of newly hired or promoted first-line supervisors in the field.
- Career Track: We help CN employees take an active involvement in their careers with Career Track, an online tool that enables them to communicate their short and long-term career interests and to help us identify available talent. Career Track is a good source for identifying internal candidates for management positions as well as unionized employees desiring a change of craft, or seeking to join the management ranks.
