CN's foremost objective is the prevention of injury and illness at work. CN promotes and protects the health and safety of its employees and strives to effectively manage illness and injury to reduce costs.

Employee Safety

Ask any CN employee what has the biggest effect on their daily work activities and what you'll likely hear is "safety". CN reinforces its safety culture through focused communications, coaching and recognition. We are committed to learning from safety incidents and to make every facility as safe as our safest facilities.

Health and Safety committees

Over 100 joint union-management health and safety committees are working actively to make CN a safer place to work for all employees. Each committee is responsible for identifying the top causes of injuries and accidents in their area, and for making safety improvements at the local level.

Drug and Alcohol Policy

A fundamental part of our commitment to the health and safety of employees is the company's zero tolerance for impairment in the workplace. In Canada, CN enforces the company's drug and alcohol policy to minimize risk in all operations. In the U.S., CN complies with firmly established rules and regulations governing drug and alcohol testing after accidents or incidents and the random testing of employees in key groups.

EFAP

CN's confidential Employee and Family Assistance Program helps employees and their families cope with a broad range of personal problems. In Canada, a team of "Peers" throughout CN helps to keep employees informed of the availability of services and each Peer receives specialized training on such things as addiction awareness and how to do away with harassment.
