Serge Pharand graduated from McGill University in 1975 and became a Chartered Accountant in 1976. He is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA), the Ordre des Comptables Agréés du Québec, and the Financial Executives International (FEI). He was awarded the title of Fellow of the Ordre des Comptables Agréés du Québec (FCA) in 2009. He served as President of the FEI Quebec Chapter from 2002 to 2009, has chaired the Organization Committee for the 2004 FEI Canada North American Rendezvous Conference in Quebec City, and served as a member of FEI's Committee on Corporate Reporting for many years. He also was Chairman of the Accounting Committee of the Association of American Railroad and acted as Adviser on the Financial Reporting Committee on International Business and has been a member of the Accounting Standards Board for the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Following extensive auditing experience with both KPMG and Coopers & Lybrand, he joined CN in 1980.
