Railroads have been shown to be six or more times as energy-efficient as heavy trucks* because rail consumes far less fuel to transport one tonne of freight one kilometre.  Since steel wheels on steel tracks produce significantly lower friction than rubber tires on pavement, much less horsepower is required to move goods on rail.  With CN's Precision Railroading, every shipment is planned to optimize fuel efficiency.
