CN conducts periodic environmental audits of our operating facilities, such as yards and terminals, to ensure compliance with applicable Canadian and U.S. regulations, corporate policies and procedures, and good environmental practices.

The goal of the audit program is to control environmental risks by evaluating activities related to air emissions, water and wastewater, waste management, fuel storage tanks, spill prevention and emergency preparedness. The transportation of dangerous goods/hazardous materials by CN is subject to separate compliance audits.

Our large operating facilities are audited every three years.  Environmental audits include an on-site review performed by a team of trained CN personnel working with independent professionals. Each audit checks for compliance with regulatory requirements, CN's policies and procedures, and best management practices.

Based on the results of the audits, action plans are developed and implemented.  In addition, the audit team ensures that best practices are shared to help educate CN employees on better practices, as well as practices that support compliance with environmental regulations.

CN's Corporate Environment Group is responsible for reporting audit findings and the progress made on action plans to CN's executive team.
