Network Operations is a vast function that is primarily responsible for running the trains.

Network Operations can be divided into three groups:

Network Transportation

People working in the Network Transportation sub-function are primarily responsible for:

  • managing all train movements over the CN system
  • managing the pool of transportation crews
  • ensuring that the crew with the right qualifications is assigned to the right train
  • acting as the primary contact with the customer when service delivery begins

Typical positions include: rail traffic controllers or train dispatchers, crew dispatchers, locomotive engineers, customer support representatives and professional engineers.

Mechanical/Engineering

People working in the Mechanical/Engineering sub-function are primarily responsible for:

  • maintaining the CN fleet of locomotives and cars used in moving freight
  • maintaining the right-of-way
  • providing safe and reliable physical plants (tracks, bridges and structures), as well as signals and communications for all train operations

Typical positions include: tradepersons, trackpersons, steel bridge workers, signals and communications workers, operations supervisors and professional engineers.

Support functions including Supply Management, CN Police, Environment and Safety

People working in the Network Operations Support Functions are primarily responsible for:

  • buying and managing the goods and services that CN needs to run its business
  • ensuring the safety and security of all activities and people related to CN's business
  • establishing strategies and initiatives that drive CN's safety effort

Typical positions include: supply managers, inventory management and stores personnel, police inspectors, special agents, and safety and environmental officers.
