Job title: Telecom Analyst
Group: Network & Security

Me

I was born in Toronto in 1981 and at the age of 2, I moved with my family to the "sunshine beaches" of Sydney, Australia. I studied part-time and completed my Bachelors' degree in Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). Early in my degree, I wanted to gain hands on experience in the telecommunications industry and was employed by RailCorp as a co-op student (my journey starts in the railway family), later on becoming a Junior Engineer in supporting their Wide Area Network. I moved to Montreal in October 2006 and joined CN a month after.

My role

As a Telecom Analyst, I'm responsible for the research and design of efficient, high availability communications networks. I learn about and develop various solutions involving technologies such as, WiMax, Wireless, Fibre Optics, Radio, VoIP, Video Streaming, SONET, TDM, WAN and LAN technologies. I'm currently working with the team in developing a video / camera strategy for CN. In doing so, I get the opportunity to work with multiple vendors to evaluate IP cameras, video encoders and video management systems in our lab.

Challenges

CN's privately owned carrier class SONET network sets the company apart from the traditional enterprise. Spanning North America, this 6000 Mile network is the backbone for both CN's corporate data network as well as train operations networks. Combine this with over 400 network locations and hundreds of trackside sites and you have a challenging work environment specially suited for skilled problem solvers and engineers.

Other exciting CN projects

CN is currently developing a new converged IP network architecture that will improve reliability, extend reach and permit new applications to be rolled out. In particular, CN is developing and deploying VOIP solutions, as well a wireless infrastructure.

Why do I like this job?

I'm proud to work for a company that plays a major role in Transportation across Canada and the US. It has a cultural focus towards Safety and Community. CN promotes growth and a career path to achieve your goals, which allows me to move forward each and every day. I also enjoy the experience of visiting sites across Canada and the US, to understand how engineering contributes to providing communications across CN's multi-business operations.
