Fibre Optic Cables

With over 6,000 miles of fiber optic cable running beneath our right-of-way, and hundreds of LANS, WANS, radio bases and telephone lines to support the flow of data, IT's telecom group works hard to ensure that CN stays well connected.

This infrastructure is the lifeblood of CN's operations supporting everything from our rail traffic control and level crossing operations to sharing business information and email. Ensuring that it remains safe and secure is the role of the Corporate Information Security Unit (CISU). By monitoring threats and vulnerabilities, and investigating incidents, they diligently provide solutions to protect CN's information and systems.

Working hand-in-hand, this dynamic duo plays a key role in supporting day-to-day operation across North America and around the globe.

Organizational Structure

The team is organized into four key areas including Telecom Engineering, Network Management, Telecom Provisioning, and our Corporate Information Security Unit. Together they analyze, design, implement and support the global network environment that connects CN's yard, offices, and mobile equipment across the world. The team also provides security monitoring, intrusion detection, and incident response to protect CN information and intellectual assets.

Technology

Working in the Network & Security is technologically challenging and exciting. Here is a snapshot of the cutting-edge technologies used in their projects:

  • Fibre: Single-mode / Multi-mode fibre, DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing)
  • Microwave: Alcatel MDS microwave system
  • Time Division Multiplexing: Alcatel TDM
  • Wireless: Wi-Fi, WiMAX
  • Telephony: Nortel PBX, Nortel NLU, VoIP, Radio over IP
  • Satellite: Satellite-based data communications, LEO satellite-based voice communications
  • Internet-based Threats: Nokia Checkpoint Firewall Appliances, Cisco PIX, McAfee SCM
  • Access and Authentification: Juniper Networks, MS ISA Proxy, MSA IAS Radius, MS PKI
