We are a firm believer that the safest crossing is no crossing at all.
As a rule of thumb, Canadian National does not support the construction of new at-grade highway-rail crossings. In fact, we advocate the opposite: we strongly encourage crossing consolidation and, even better, closure.
Of course, there are certain situations where at-grade crossings must be constructed. And for those cases, we expect to hear from anyone wishing to construct or reconstruct a railway crossing (including grade separated crossings). Although it is no longer required by law, reaching a negotiated agreement with us — covering all construction and maintenance issues, including how we will split the costs — is the right route to take.
